On 20 May 2011 a true to size replica of 'The Last Judgment' by Lucas van Leyden will be unveiled on the location where the original triptych was displayed in the 16th century: the Church of Peter (Pieterskerk) in Leiden.

Tijdens de Lucas van Leyden tentoonstelling zal een specialist (meestal een auteur van de catalogus) één werk op zaal “onder de loep” nemen voor een groep van maximaal 15 personen. De toelichting duurt een half uur en elke deelnemer krijgt daadwerkelijk een loepje uitgereikt.

Lecture by Jan Piet Filedt Kok (In Dutch)

Cornelis Schuyt (1557-1616) was the musical pride of the city of Leiden. He was the organ player of the Hooglandse Church and the Church of St. Peter. In his own days and times he was known as one of the very best of top composers. He owed this reputation to his fabulous madrigals.

De series by Studium Generale closes with a view of the exhibition at Museum De Lakenhal. Curator of the museum and of the exhibition Christiaan Vogelaar will provide an introduction.

Lucas van Leyden, as per many aspects his precursor Albrecht Durer, were commissioned to portray scenes from The Bible and Christianity. Soon these works of art were removed by force from churches, following the teachings of the new religion, following Johannes Calvijn.

Politics, economic and city culture in mutual interaction. The early sixteenth century the city of Leiden was suffering economic downtime and immense financial trouble, plus a landlord ever so more tightening his firm grip on local politics. In a catchy lecture drs. Cor de Graaf of the Regionaal Archief (Regional Archive) recounts the history of a professional coiners gang, active in the 16th century in the city of Leiden and far beyond the city parameter.

On Sunday the 6th of February Museum De Lakenhal gives all residents of Leiden and the surrounding area a final opportunity to share their favourite 3rd of October moment with the museum. De Lakenhal is looking for stories and tangible memories of the 3rd of October celebration. These memories will become part of the exhibition ‘The Relief of Leiden (1574): from Freedom to Festival’, on display in the museum in the second half of 2011.

Every Sunday at 15:15 you can join a free tour of the museum. No need to sign up in advance, just come to the assembly on the square directly in front of the museum entrance. The guide explains what’s going on in the museum.

On the 28th of November the fourth and last edition of this year’s series of Leiden Salons takes place. Onno Blom welcomes guests from the worlds of art, science and politics. This time the guests will be poet, novelist, essayist, critic and polemicist Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer and Steven Engelsman, director of the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden. Music will be taken care of by Oene van Geel, who will add lustre to the afternoon with his violin playing.

On the 23th of November Thomas Berghuis will give a lecture/ workshop about this subject. Thomas Berghuis teaches at the University of Sydney, worked as curator contemporary Asian art and published his book ‘Performance Art in China’ in 2006. The workshop/ lecture is organised by Museum De Lakenhal in cooperation with Scheltema and the KABK in The Hague. There are only a few places left for Master students in Art History or curators.

The last one in our series of readings on collecting. Pieter ter Keurs is head of collections at the RMO. Museum De Lakenhal was established in the 19th century. This reading gives an insight into the motives and basic idea behind the collection of De Lakenhal.

The 15th of July is the birthday of Rembrandt van Rijn. Traditionally, the anniversary of this artist from Leiden is celebrated with his very own night. A wreath is placed by his statue on the Witte Singel and a theatrical walk through the city-centre departs from Museum De Lakenhal.

This Sunday visual artists Nicola and Roos give a workshop from 2:00 – 3:15 PM for children aged 6 to 12. First the children are brought into the museum and shown special objects. What could their use be? Afterwards the kids get to work in the children depot.

The second edition of Museum Night Leiden takes place on the 2nd of July 2010! Leiden’s seven big museums will be opened from 8:00 PM until 1:00 AM. Of course you can enjoy the regular collection, but it’s also a night of  dancing and live performances, drinks and snacks. Special experiences and cultural fireworks! The programme of De Lakenhal will follow later.
