Discover the chain

Tinka van der Kooij

The world of textile waste remains hidden to many consumers, while we all play an important role in it. We all wear clothes that we eventually throw away. But where do they go?

We are increasingly aware that most of our outfits are made on the other side of the world. But do we also understand that the clothing chain ends on that side of the world just as often? That is where a veritable textile mountain gathers. By confronting the visitor with this mountain, Tina van der Kooij hopes to offer a medicine against shopping addiction. With this installation and the accompanying data visualisations, she charts the figures and statistics about the problems in the textile industry.

Fortunately, visitors can also contribute directly to the solution: by sorting and recycling themselves, they complete the chain. In this way, Tinka van der Kooij creates a plea for a more sustainable world and lets the visitor set a good example himself.

about the maker

Tinka van der Kooij is a sewing teacher, researcher and volunteer at a charity shop in Utrecht. There, she is confronted again and again with our nonchalant way of dealing with textile waste. As a sewing teacher, she tries to offer a remedy: by recycling clothes, we can solve an important part of the problem ourselves. From her role as researcher, she tries to better inform people about our textile problem.

If Things Grow Wrong

Discover the chain is part of the exhibition If Things Grow Wrong. We want faster, bigger, more. Is that always better, or do problems grow unnoticed? The exhibition on growth addiction can be seen from October 15th in Museum De Lakenhal.
