Majalla's Mantel
Friday 8 November from 19:00 till 22:00
An evening dedicated to the project Majalla's Cloak - Frayed edges of the Leiden Cloth on display at Museum De Lakenhal from 8 November.
What hidden stories can you find in textiles - in a cloth, a shirt, a pair of jeans? How do you unravel a painful history? In the participatory art project Majalla's Cloak, artists Sarah van Lamsweerde, Alicia Hoost, Eugenie Boon, Esther Mugambi and Claire Zandvliet explore the connections between the historic Leiden cloth industry and the slave trade. The name Majalla refers to an enslaved boy mentioned in correspondence surrounding Daniel van Eijs, an 18th-century Leiden cloth merchant and later plantation owner. Curious about these stories? At this Lakenhal Late you will discover them in a diverse program.
THE PROGRAM
Presentation Majalla's Cloak
From 19:00 till 22:00 at the Pape Hall
The installation Majalla's Mantel is the result of a participatory project by an interdisciplinary group of artists. Inspired by stories of resistance to slavery and the meaning of clothing in that society of inequality and oppression, the team posthumously created a freedom cloak for Majalla and his peers. This cloak, a symbol of hope and dignity, depicts how Majalla would free himself from a world of inhumane exploitation.
During Lakenhal Late, this presentation is on view for the first time.
Performance Majalla's Cloak
From 19:15 till 19:35 and from 21:00 till 21:20 in the Pape Hall
During Lakenhal Late, the performance Majalla's Cloak will be held. Inspired by stories of resistance to slavery, Hoost and Van Lamsweerde decided to posthumously create a freedom cloak for Majalla and his peers. In this performance, various components from the presentation in the Pape Hall are brought together to create this cloak for Majalla. The songs that accompany the bringing together of the cloak were written in response to conversations with Leiden descendants of enslaved people and conversations during the unraveling sessions held this summer.
