Marije Vermeulen (1976) creates paintings, installations and murals, in which clear, fresh use of colour stands out. Her playful style is influenced by Pop Art as well as De Stijl.

Vermeulen’s way of working is constructivist; she stacks, tilts and slides shapes, blocks and planes on and next to eachother. In this process, she uses basic shapes such as the square, triangle and circle, and derived shapes such as stripe-patterns, that can be recognized in styled hatched areas. The sleek area division, shape and colour combinations of Vermeulens compositions have their origin in fashion, magazines and design, but also nature.

Her abstract works are the result of a comprehensive design process in sketches. For her, actions such as measuring, halving, tilting, repeating and replacing go hand in hand with an associative use of colour in playful variation, and result in a controlled yet spontaneous image. The sources from which colour and shape have originated are strikingly romantic: swaying palm trees, sunsets, tropically coloured flowers and beach houses.

Marije Vermeulen has studied at the art academies of Den Bosch and Arnhem. She participated in group exhibitions with Dutch artists that are part of De Lakenhal Open Air Museum. 100 Years áfter De Stijl, such as Jan van der Ploeg, Linda Arts and Henriette van ’t Hoog. Together with Guido Nieuwendijk she founded the Temporary Artspace of Dutch Abstracts (TADA) in 2011. TADA intervenes in other existing spaces.

Vermeulen participated in: Raid Projects Los Angeles (VS), Kunsthal KAdE Amersfoort, Soil Gallery Seattle (VS), Tiefgarage Keulen (DE), ParisCONCRET Paris (FR), RE-Rotterdam, INDEX Melbourne (AUS), Post-Museum Singapore (SG), adhoc raum Bochum (DE) en SNAP projects in Lyon (FR).
