On Friday 9 February it's time again for Lakenhal Late! This edition, meet the special story of the Surinamese Student Union as well as students of the Afro Student Association. During this evening we dive deeper into history and the parallels with today. What does this emancipation struggle look like among students at Leiden University today? What is being agendized and in what ways? What has changed?

Experience an evening of spoken word, dance performances, workshops and short tours of the exhibition I Will Fight - Anton de Kom and the Surinamese Student Union. The program is put together in collaboration with the Afro Student Association, a student network working hard for an inclusive university.

Paul Day, reunionist of the Suriname Student Union, and Levi Ommen, former president of the Afro Student Association, led by Mitchell Esajas of The Black Archives, will discuss the struggle for emancipation among students then and now. What means did the Surinamese Student Union use? And are there differences with how the Afro Student Association puts these issues on the agenda?

In addition to the loot print We slaves of Suriname, the Surinamese Student Union also published an anthology of poems by Anton de Kom, entitled I Will Fight. During this evening, become acquainted with De Kom's poetry through the eyes of Leiden word artist Joshua Snijders. After a short introduction, he will recite a number of Anton de Kom's poems.
Workshop & discussion

This activity is in English In this workshop students of Afro Student Association encourage you to take the media in our own hands. Take a piece of paper and start cutting snippets, words and text fragments. Create alternative narratives and start the discussion about inclusion, emancipation struggle and empowerment.

Dance performance
20.00 at the Rear courtyard
In this dance performance, created by Céline Kodjo, the audience will be emersed into an eclectic and vibrant world. The mix of afrobeats, amapiano paired with powerful moves will create an immense and profound experience.
Open Studio
All evening in the Studio
Fancy making something yourself? Inspired by the work of Hedy Tjin, you will get to work with details of an artwork from the collection. Translate a detail into felt in Tjin's color palette and go home with a special textile work.

During Lakenhal Laat you can also visit the exhibition. In this expo the Surinamese Student Union will tell the story of Anton de Kom's We Slaves of Suriname. Through historical objects, short films and the colorful murals by Hedy Tjin the for many unknown story of Anton de Kom's We slaves of Suriname is told by the Surinamese Student Union.
